More Top 10 Honors for Tucson

Even though there's not a beach nearby, Tucson is making waves when it comes to Top 10 lists for quality of life related issues.

In "America's Best Places to Live 2003," MSN's web site rated 331 metropolitan areas in categories including cost of living, crime rate, education, home prices, and weather. Tucson came in 5th, a high honor considering the competition.

And, in "Best Places for Outdoor Activities," MSN also placed Tucson 5th in its "Close to the Big Outdoors" survey. MSN cited the city's closeness to outdoor activities, coupled with a balance of quality education, housing, jobs, health, and arts and entertainment.

Tucson also retained its 7th place ranking in Hispanic Magazine list of Top 10 Cities for Hispanics 2003.

According to the magazine, readers this year focused on job opportunities, a maintainable cost of living, strong education systems, a powerful political voice, and a sense of heritage.

Hispanic Magazine also considers job opportunities and cultural growth. Tucson ranked higher than Los Angeles, Chicago, and Las Vegas (8, 9, 10). Once again, Phoenix did not make the list.

"This award reflects the attitude which prevails and continues to grow in Tucson: Hispanics, of all origins, are to be appreciated for their many contribution to this community whether they be in the fields of business, government, medicine, mass media, education, arts and culture, religion, or simply as consumers," said Augie Garcia, Director of the City's Tucson-Mexico Trade Office. "Hispanics have played a strong role in Tucson's leadership over several centuries. Little by little, we are assuming our rightful place in all those areas again and these contributions are becoming more noticeable all the time as is evidenced by this evaluation in Hispanic Magazine."
